Free clinics for the New Year

Before the Chinese New Year, TIMA doctors and Tzu Chi volunteers held free clinics in Nanzhuang(南庄) and Zhuolan(卓兰) of central Taiwan. In addition to providing free health care to patients, volunteers also prepared Chinese New Year calligraphy, to wish participants a prosperous Year of the Ox.

< Calligraphy art a New Year's blessing >

At Tzu Chi's free clinic in Nanzhuan (南庄), Taiwan, Tzu Chi Honorary Board member Ho Taixiong (侯泰雄) wields his calligraphy brush in celebration of the Lunar New Year. It is his first free clinic.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Ho Taixiong:I write very happily and I hope that they too can feel it.

< Lasting friendship lights up smiles >

TIMA doctors extend the festive spirit to care recipient and stroke sufferer, Deming, who is wheelchair-bound. After receiving years of Tzu Chi's care, Deming is now able to express his gratitude.

Bless you Deming, bless you, and a happy new year.

Say thank you.

< Heartwarming exchanges >

And in Zhuolan (卓兰), Zhan Ayin (詹阿银) from Canada is here at her first free clinic, making the most of her time helping out. In the chilly weather she gives this old woman warmth, only to be reciprocated by more.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Zhan Ayin:Master says that you must seize the moment. I came back to be with my mother and am staying for a longer period of time. That's why I'm able take part in this event. I feel very fortunate.

Though Taiwan is experiencing low temperatures during the Lunar New Year, Tzu Chi's love warms all needy corners.

Advanced technology at free clinic

The doctor focuses all his mind to conduct a cataract removal, a surgery that takes merely ten minutes thanks to an advanced medical technique called phacoemulsification.

Myanmar Islamic Hospital ophthalmologist, Dr. Ko Ko Tin:
I witnessed about seven cases there, and all three could operate really well. I'm quite eager to do phaco(emulsification). I want to do phaco very much.

Here to learn new medical expertise, local ophthalmologist Dr. Ko Ko Tin is in awe of the latest form of cataract surgery offered by Tzu Chi's free clinic. TIMA Philippine is using the pioneering equipment. Here at Yangon's Myodaw Hospital, on the first day of Tzu Chi's free clinic patients flocked in early for the simple yet life-changing eye procedure.

Cataract patient, U Aye Lwin:
I'm very thankful for Tzu Chi because the eye is a very important organ. Without a pair of crystal clear eyes you won't be able to find the right direction and do the right things. I'm very happy and excited. After the surgery, it feels like I got a brand new pair of eyes from my parents.

< Clearing the clouds in the eyes >
On the second day some 66 cataract patients return for a post-surgery check-up, while some go under the knife for a second time, such as Dharma Master San Di Mar, who has cataracts in both eyes. After the second surgery, his once cloudy vision cleared up.

Buddhist monk, Dharma Master San Di Mar:
I've never seen before like this one,
all you peoples and your countries,
I give the good wishes.
Everything is excellent, excellent.
(Very clearly?)
Yes, very clearly. Thank you, thank you.
Everything is different now,
walking and taking the meals.

< A reunion with former patients >

At the free clinic, young burn victim Myo Wai Kyaw arrives.
You've recovered well!

Burned by an upturned oil lamp, Myo Wai Kyaw was first discovered at a Tzu Chi free clinic last year after Cyclone Nargis. Volunteers helped arrange skin grafting surgery.

Dalin Hospital superintendent, Jian Shouxin:
You must tell him to wear his mask, for at least three years. Come back again for a check-up in six months' time.

The medical team from Taiwan goes to another hospital to visit Htet Wai Lin.

Uncle, amituofo!
Amituofo!
Say amituofo to all.
Amituofo to all uncles.

< Planting joy in the little boy's mind >
Since last December, Htet Wai Lin, who was born unable to walk, has been through four operations courtesy of Tzu Chi. He will stay in the hospital for as long as his rehabilitation requires.

I'm very very happy.
And anything else?
Just happy.

< Recognition for Tzu Chi's service >
The three-day medical event not only gives patients renewed health and elicits plenty of smiles, it is also an experience that deeply impressed Yangon doctors. It is here they can learn about new medical advancements. Yangon city mayor Aung Thein Lynn also graces the event to express his gratitude.

Yangon City mayor's interpreter:
We are all brothers and sisters and fate brings us together today. Thank you all for helping our poor and needy.

The letter of thanks to Master Cheng Yen holds more gratitude than words can ever express, in appreciation of Tzu Chi's Cyclone Nargis relief efforts.

< Future opportunities to help await >
As the free clinic draws to an end, volunteers hold a party for Myodaw Hospital's medical staff, handing out Tzu Chi's mementos and putting on a sign language performance of the song, "One Family". Though parting is such sweet sorrow for the medical volunteers and their Burmese counterparts, in future there will be plenty of opportunities for them to work together to deliver compassion to where it's needed.

Free dental clinics in California

In light of the global financial crisis, the number of street people in the United States is on the rise. Tzu Chi volunteers in Los Angeles have been providing care for the homeless since the beginning of this year. Meanwhile, volunteers in Northern California have also convened free dental clinics in poor communities, helping guard the health of local residents.

< Free dental service for the homeless >
It is a winter night in Los Angeles, and these street people are taking refuge at the local homeless shelter. Unable to obtain a proper meal, maintaining oral health is a luxury they can't even think of. Local Tzu Chi volunteers are bringing free dental services to this needy group.

Some have already suffered from severe toothaches - some, for more than seven months; another used superglue to keep his dentures intact. Daniel here lost all of his teeth, and must gum all of his food. Fortunately, his pain will soon be alleviated, as this TIMA doctor is making dentures for him.

TIMA doctor, Zheng Dunren:
"Most of them haven't received a dental treatment in a long time. Some teeth are rotten, some are swollen, and others ache. Our main focus is to remove their pain. We also make dentures for those who lack front teeth, so they can go out to find jobs."

"So you're done?"
"How do you feel?"
"I feel great, thank you"
"So you got your problems taken care (of)?"
"Cleaning and everything. I feel really good. Thank you very much."

< Guarding the health of youngsters >
Apart from serving the homeless, Northern California Tzu Chi volunteers also tour local communities to carry out free dental clinics. A low-income elementary school is their first stop.

"Do you brush yourself?"
"No."
"Mummy brushes for you?"

Starting from this May, the children must receive a dental checkup before enrolling in school, adding financial pressure to the burden on these impoverished families. Thus, Tzu Chi's free dental service is not only reducing the drop out rate among poor students - it is also providing these youngsters a good place to start their education.

TIMA doctor, Zheng Dunren:
